The Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) today announced a temporary closure of the recreational Bluefish (Pomatomus saltatrix) fishery in state waters for the months of March and April 2024. This action is necessary to ensure the long-term sustainability of the Bluefish population along the Atlantic coast.

The event is part of Georgia History Festival’s statewide celebration of “Super Museum Sunday.” Visitors can learn about Geechee Gullah ring shouting, translate the Cherokee Nation’s first newspaper, admire FDR’s hand-controlled roadster, and walk in the footsteps of Revolutionary War and Civil War soldiers. Georgia’s commercial and recreational food shrimp season closes at 6:20 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 18, 2024. The closure affects Georgia’s territorial waters three nautical miles out to sea. Federal waters three to 200 nautical miles offshore remain open.

The Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) continues to expand its focus on developing accessible opportunities. The agency hosted its third adaptive hunt since 2021 this month. Five hunters and a hunting buddy were paired with a guide for the agency’s two-day Hunt and Learn experience on private property in Newton County.

Andre McLendon, a longtime Crawfordville resident and manager of A.H. Stephens State Park, was recently promoted to Region 3 Manager of the Georgia State Parks & Historic Sites, a division of the Department of Natural Resources. He will be responsible for guiding management and protection of 12 sites, including Mistletoe, Elijah Clark and Hard Labor Creek state parks.

One of Savannah’s most photographed historic sites, colonial Wormsloe, unveiled its new visitor center on Wednesday, January 3. State and local leaders, Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) officials, members of the Georgia Outdoor Stewardship Trust Fund Board of Trustees, and others gathered for the ribbon-cutting at the new Wormsloe State Historic Site Visitor Center.

Rangers at more than 40 Georgia State Parks and Historic Sites are offering guided adventures where you can connect with friends, family and the great outdoors. Hikers can choose from a variety of distances and difficulties, from kid-friendly strolls to heart-pumping treks. Participants will get a First Day Hikes sticker to commemorate their accomplishments.
